Week 2 Release Day

The focus of my observation was behavior management.

Observation of teacher

Things I learned:

While walking to the pool teacher stopped the children and said if they had to stop one more time then they would have to practice at morning tea. This set the expectation for the children rather than telling them what to do. They had to think about what they could do to not stop again.

Using hands on heads to stop the children from fidgeting.

Being specific about children's actions and warning them straight away.

Giving praise straight away.

Then on the way back to the classroom the teacher set a goal for the children; to stop less times than when they walked to the pool.

Managing children by giving them the choice and responsibility.

Used variation in voice when explaining something.

Interaction with class and giving them choice about right behavior and consequences when children aren't doing the right thing during a group challenge.

Going forward:
From this observation I will try to be more specific in my language so that the children understand what they are doing right and wrong. Also I will be more mindful of letting the children set the rules and consequences around classroom behavior and management.

I have been able to reflect on what I can do to improve my teaching and the way I manage children around the swimming pool, walking through the school and sitting on the mat.
