The focus for this observation for this week is Behaviour Management
Observation of the teacher
As I walked in the teacher was doing her reading tumble daily 4. She was working with a group while the rest of the class were reading independently. All the children were doing what they were asked.
The teacher stayed connected with her class room by looking up every now and again to give some positive praise. The she continued to interact with her guided reading group.
While the guided reading group are reading their passage the teacher gets up and whispers in the ear of a few children who are not doing the right thing.
Throughout this session the teacher consistently used positive praise and stayed connected with her class.
She also reinforces the correct behaviour e.g. two students modelled what it looked like to go and read with a buddy and verbally annotated what they did well and what they could improve one. This set the expectation for buddy reading.
Things I learned
Stay connected with the class around you when you are with a group. It dosen't need to be a big deal, just look up every 5 minutes and praise someone for doing the right thing.
Have different queues for different things such as; clapping when they are working in different groups, using a verbal call and responds for getting them quite like shushing and they shush back.
Moving forward
From this observation I will try to keep a connection with the class while I am working with a guided group. Also I will use modelling so the students can see what the expectations are in terms of what I would like them to do e.g. moving from one activity to another.
